Mellish Family Vineyards Klipmynpad Pinotage 2023
Mellish Family Vineyards Klipmynpad Pinotage 2023
An attractive nose of violets, red cherry, wild strawberry, purple plum and mulberry follows onto the palate. A minty, herbal note from the stems along with smoke and clove from barrel maturation give the wine a savoury counterpoint to the fruit. The wine is akin to Pinot Noir in body with refreshing acidity and supple tannins giving structure. The finish is long, dry and saline in character.

Other | From a bush vine vineyard planted in 2014, on the north-facing slopes of the Klipmynpad vineyard, on Welbeloond Farm. The vineyard has ancient, stony, shale soils and sits between 120 and 150 m above sea-level and is 9 Km east of the Atlantic Ocean. The vineyard has been farmed organically since its inception, but not yet certified.
Harvest yields were 3.68 tons/Ha. Picked by hand into crates early in the morning,10% of the grapes were left as whole-bunch with the remainder destemmed and transferred to a two-ton, open fermentation vessel. The juice began spontaneous fermentation from ambient yeasts after two days of soaking. During fermentation the wine was punched down three times daily. After 4 days the wine was pressed and then matured in 225 litre, seasoned, French oak barrels for 9 months before bottling. W.O. Durbanville, Cape Town
